Greetings, and The Promise

Hi. This is my new blog. It will be mostly about movies I've seen and books I've read.

Anyways, right to the point. Last night, I saw The Promise. This was a beautiful, but incomprehensible, martial arts movie. Here's the setup: a grubby little girl steals a pastry from the hand of a dead soldier on a battlefield. A little boy, the son of the general who commanded these dead troups, captures her, and says he will let her keep the pastry, if she promises to be his slave. She promises, but than hits him over the head and runs. At this point, a floaty haired goddess appears to the little girl, and says that she can have all the beauty and riches in the world in exchange for never experiencing a lasting love. The girl agrees. Floaty haired goddess tells her that her destiny is now set, and cannot be changed unless time flows backwards, the dead rise, etc.

Flash forward twenty years...

At this point, saying any more would spoil the story, such as it is. Suffice to say that there is much fighting, political intrigue, mistaken identity, dudes who can run really fricking fast, apparently because they are from 'The Land of Snow', a chick being flown like a kite, and the floaty haired goddess makes a couple more equally cryptic appearances.

If you can get past the 'wtf' iducing plot, it's easy to appreciate the fact that every 2-5 minutes you'll see something simply jaw droppingly beautiful. I would recommend this movie, but only to people who can appreciate style-over-substance film-making.

Well, that's all for now. I'll do some book-blogging tomorrow, I think.
